PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The McGilvray Aquatic Centre is a concept study for a 50m swimming pool and plunge pool for diving platforms, using the efficiency of portal frame construction to achieve uninterrupted spans throughout the main pool areas. A secondary internal shell comrpised of timber is layered under the primary steel frame construction to soften the interior spaces, circulation corridors and window seating within the building facade.
Three different levels of transparency is introduced both in the facade and ceiling - solid systems, screening over glass, and glass systems, for visual connection to the surrounding landscape, as well as creating rhythmic natural lighting for the interior spaces. The elongation effect of the centre is lessened by the articulation of the various external and internal facade conditions, to create a more intimate sense of scale for the public.
